San Francisco State University psychology professor David Matsumoto is in Australia to speak at an emotional skills conference this week, which challenges existing workplace training and aims to help redevelop human skills to aid business growth.

"Reading people is a lost skill because of the nature of our culture," Professor Matsumoto said.

He said there was a whole universe of non-verbal behaviour that needed to be rediscovered.

Another speaker at the conference is New Intelligence managing director Steve Longford.
