Computers Reading Micros

CSIRO computer scientist Dr Simon Lucey is working on software to enable computers to identify micro-expressions and detect when a person is hiding their true emotions.  Dr Lucey's research is aimed at developing a system for use in medical situations where a patients emotions are not being communicated accurately.

Dr Lucey said th technology was meant for use as a tool but could be a new type of lie detector.  The science behind the technology is based on the work of Dr Paul Ekman who has pioneered research into universal emotions and the leaking of micro-expressions when true emotions are hidden.  This science has been popularised recently through such television shows as Lie to Me.
